A happy weekend
Took a half-day off on Friday to go out with Yann to celebrate my birthday. But before I left office, my colleagues got a mocha cake and to top it off, they bought me a lovely Casio Edifice. The cake was pretty yummy and the watch was a pleasant surprise! It looks pretty good too!
Picked up Yann before popping into Hotel 1929 to try out the place. It's becoming a hobby for us to try out fancy place ever since a bunch of us stayed in Gallery Hotel for our X'mas/New Year celebration. According to Yann, there were much hype about this hotel with its individually designed rooms and their designer chairs. However, to our dismay, the deluxe room we had had just about the size to fit a queen size bed and a washroom, which itself, is pretty small. So besides the bed, there isn't anywhere else you can go, without endangering yourself.
Read on if you are interested about Science Centre, the Art of Star Wars and crappy breakfast.
Anyway, we didn't stay much time in there as we were on our way to Orchard to do some shopping to clear some discount vouchers. However, as much as we wanted to, we somehow didn't find something to buy. Dismayed as we were, we trooped down to Science Centre to check out the Art of Star Wars exhibition which ended today.

The show costs S$18 per person and was a disappointment. What you got from the exhibition, was models of the space crafts used in the show, costumes of the main characters plus video clips you would probably get from the Star Wars DVDs.

No insights of the technologies, or real fun stuff you can try based on the technologies used in the filming. I remember how for the earlier movies, they had to use stop-action filming to shoot all the action shots prior to digital effects. Would have been great to see those in action.

For fans, I guess the best parts must be the shop which had those merchandise you can spend on if you are a collector.

As both of us left the exhibit, we found ourselves wandering around the other sections within Science Centre. It took us probably 10 minutes to go through all the various dated exhibits that were housed in there. Many of them were probably around since the 80s and either not working very well, or displayed information which were at least a decade old.
Considering how the government's emphasis on IT, this was greatly missing in the Science Centre. Yes the theories might not change, but how we present those information should be updated to appeal to kids. We saw more kids playing outside with the water fountains than exploring the exhibits. It is about time for a makeover.

Yann wanted to try out this Penang buffet restaurant at this International Business Park nearby but unfortunately it was closed for some function. In the end, dinner was at IMM with some kopitiam food. It wasn't delicious but well, decent enough for dinner. Anyway, brought ourselves back to the hotel slightly before midnight and we were in dreamland before we knew it.
After a good night's sleep, we went down to have our breakfast to discover that we missed the breakfast time by about 10 minutes, and we were left with cereals, milk and some toast with jams. It was pretty annoying as well, this isn't a big hotel with hundreds of guests. When we got down to the Ember Room, which had pretty good reviews, there were another two couples who finished their breakfast. Wouldn't it be good service to just prepare the breakfast for us, which we found out was egg, sausage and some beans. Unfortunately, they seem to be more eager to clear the dining area and before we could go back for seconds, they had clear the rest of the food. Thankfully, the hotel is walking distance from Maxwell and so we went there to grab some decent breakfast.

Anyway, bottom line, skip this hotel if you are looking for a uber-fancy-chic hotel to stay in. Hotel-81 might be a better choice.
Choir had a nice wake up call on Saturday evening when we did a pretty embarrassing performance at the informal choral exchange show organised by Zech at his church. At least I hope most of them realised it was a bad performance. We have a lot to work on in the next three months and hopefully, we pull our socks up, and better do that soon. Receive a nice leather Adidas bag, a shoe bag and a Adidas tee from the bunch of them and I better use them more often at the gym.
Was suppose to go for bowling after choir but somehow, the place I thought had a funky night bowling alley, had shut that down three years back. A few of us ended up at Yokie's place for some Pictionary. Maybe it was the late hours, but somehow, we couldn't link holiday-man with the word tourist. Bah.
All in all, this had been a nice weekend. All thanks to the gf who pushed me to get the half-day leave, got us the hotel stay and also printed out some rather funky tee-shirt which she made me promise not to wear out. Plus my colleagues at work and the choir friends, I enjoyed my birthday again.

luckily u didn't try the penang buffet. I thought it's very normal food, equivalent (or less) to those you find at Maxwell.
